My name is Emily Malsam. I hail from North Dakota where I received both my B.S. in English Education and my Masters Degree in Rhetoric & Linguistics. I have taught in Minnesota, North Dakota, Mexico, and now California. I love to read and I typically find myself reading The Bee, sci-fi classics, The Week, a LaDuke fiction or non-fiction text, and tales that remind me of home and future travels.
I am currently interested in Asian languages and began studying Chinese two years ago. Another area of interest for me is the possible evolution of language. The source of language evolution and the possible network of languages are fascinating. I am also interested in Native American literature and cultures, as well as fair-wage farming and environmental campaigns. Much of my graduate work involved virtual environments, electronic mediums, and computer language.
During the fall semester, I am teaching English 101, with a concentration on Victorian Gothic Literature. We'll be studying the monsters within ourselves, including themes such as Duality, Morality, and other lessons the Victorians thought we should learn. Students should expect to work diligently on multiple academic essays. We will be reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Portrait of Dorian Gray, along with Rosetti's "Goblin Market."
I am also teaching English 179: Introduction to Native American Literature, Myths, and the Oral Tradition. We'll be discussing the value of studying Native American literature and exploring the themes endemic to this diverse group of cultures. Additionally, we'll look at creation accounts, trickster tales, and local legends. Over the semester, we'll be reading Native American Literature, an anthology compiled by Gerald Vizenor, Erdrich's Tracks, and Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.
